It’s been quite a while since I made a comedy. So long in fact that it predates my ability to use a camera. Back in the late 2000s and early 2010s I performed as a standup comedian, and a member of the improv group ‘Tickled By Freaks’. I wrote a couple of absurd comic novels, and made a series of very silly and often gratuitously offensive short films. I have no regrets.
Fast forward to last weekend at the Kino Dublin event at the Offline Film Festival in Birr. Two local volunteers stood out, Jack “Conky” Concannon and Kane “Fatz” Shortt. The lads camaraderie and banter were infectious and soon I’d concocted an idea about a couple of small town criminals egging each other on to more and more absurd crimes. Pursed by Finbar Coady’s Garda Patsy O’Callahan, and Calum Foy’s drug kingpin ‘Big Mike’, the film that resulted has Fatz and Conky, playing ludicrously dumbed down versions of their younger selves, careening around Birr creating pure havoc.
We’ll throw it into some festivals sure, see what happens! Thanks to Liam Hall Walsh and Patrick O’Brien of Kino Dublin who invited me down, and Offally County Council Film Commission for hosting the event.
