Threat Detection – Episode 16 – Horror (Part 1)

EP16

Download: Threat Detection – Episode 16

In this weeks ‘very special episode’ of Threat Detection, we discuss horror in videogames. We touch on the history of horror games from ‘Alone in the Dark’ to ‘Amnesia A Machine for Pigs’. We talk about how the mechanics of horror are evolving, and how they’ll change now that VR is around the horror. Finally we explore the potential for horror games that transcend our jaded cynicism, and make us truly afraid.

BUT WAIT JUST ONE SECOND!

We’re also running a competition! We have two tickets each to give away to Gamecraft game jams in Dublin (17th / 18th May) & Galway (10th May). If the idea of working on a brand new game in a few short hours surrounded by fellow geeks sounds appealing, respond in the comments for your chance to win free tickets!

  1. That sounds very appealing. Do you require previous experience creating video games?

  2. Not at all Sean, although having some familiarity with either programming (even just some javascript) or graphic design would be pretty necessary I’d say. That said, if you can draw or even help out with photoshop etc, you could team up with someone even if you can’t code yourself. Which jam are you interested in (Galway or Dublin)?

  3. Ah, I’ve been to Gamecraft in Dublin before, it’s great fun and not nearly as stressful as I expected. You just end with a fairly limited game.

Looking forward to the other half of this episode too, I enjoyed the banter. 😛

  4. Hey Gary, cheers for the feedback! Are you interested in the tickets? I’m assuming Sean is after the Galway ones, but I haven’t heard back from him yet.

    1. Yeah Gareth, I’d be interested in the Dublin ones. I’m planning to go anyway, just hadn’t grabbed my ticket yet. When will you be deciding who gets the tickets?

Also out of curiosity are either of you guys planning to go to it?

  5. Contest is now closed! Thanks guys. And yes we hope to be there, covering the event.
