Peter Sellars on the audience

Played a monstrous gig on Monday, of which more anon. First gig I’ve played with an actively hostile audience. It was in a rock club, and the scenesters had either ignored or heckled every performer before me. I managed OK considering, but it was a fascinating (and oddly confidence inspiring) experience. While it’s perhaps true that an utterly magnificent performer can win over any crowd, a receptive audience greatly facilitates a wonderful performance. By contrast, an audience of ‘idiots’, in missing the irony & indeed the point, can make a good show virtually impossible.
