As was predicted Frank Black did indeed play a gig in (or at least near) Stephens Green) on Saturday! Literally hundreds gathered at the bandstand and throughout the park in expectation of the appearance of the former Pixies front man, and despite the closure of the park at 5pm, the patient were rewarded with a brief visitation. Black Francis appeared as if from nowhere outside the Stephens Green shopping centre gate, and was immediately mobbed by adoring rockers from at least three generations. He managed a couple of acoustic songs – all but inaudible, and indeed invisible, in the swell of rock fiends, before being carted of by her majesties finest Garda Siochana, although to the best of our knowledge he did play his scheduled gig that evening, so presumably the escort was ‘for his protection’.
